A few suggestions for fuels for bee smokers which some beekeepers have found to be successful:
Sunflower stalks
Dried grapevine prunings
Used egg cartons - the paper mache type
Lavender - run it through a compost shredder first. It apparently has a calming effect on the bees.
Used hessian material.
Any other suggestions gratefully received!
